Runes of Magic : a new addiction perhaps?

Posted by johnwedd on 16 Dec 2008 | Tagged as: blog, gaming

Runes of Magic - Current news.

I came across this on Kotaku and decided to look it over, the features, the look and general gameplay SEAM to be cherry picked from various sources. Namely city of heroes, EverQuest, and (of course) World of warcraft.

Screen-shots and videos are on par graphically with all of the above, so with a little tweaking, I should be able to play it on this poor lil’lappy.

It boasts player housing, dual classes, a multitude of professions, a unique crafting system, and an abundance of beasties to slay in the name of goodness or evilness (i’m guessing that the lines on that blur so much it will become more of a hinderance than a help).

i don’t know what the actual game-play is just yet, it looks like its passable, but we’ll see. The art seams to be remensent of renasaunce era style, as opposed to the medevil overtones of most fantasy games.

It’s a 3.4 gig download so its taking forever to get.

Advergaming : a new genre?

Posted by johnwedd on 15 Dec 2008 | Tagged as: blog, gaming

This Wednesday: A dash of advergaming - Joystiq.

Is it wrong to have advertising in games? it works for television. Why not gaming?

games like Dungeon Runners get there bread and butter from adspace, the rest from optional subscriptions. in this day of economic downturn, maybe its best if we examine it.

Little Big Content

Posted by johnwedd on 15 Dec 2008 | Tagged as: blog, gaming

LittleBigPlanet Street Fighter Costumes - Joystiq.

In a game that strives to be the center of user generated content, dropping in fan service would eventually be involved. I’ve seen videos of LBP levels reflecting everything from Mirror’s Edge, to  a complete recreation of the first 3 levels of Mario Brothers.

I think that this is an excellent way for beginners to truely enjoy the act of designing a portion of a game. There is a sense of accoplishment that designers get from completing a game level. After we are satisfied with its design, that it runs without bugs and just screams Cool.

The association of the feeling of achievement with something genuinely creative rather than merely completing a task it encourages creativity on a larger scale. We need more games with level editors that aspire to be simple and fun to use.

I have found something that may be another way, i happen to be part of its beta.  Atmosphir

Myst: Open Sourced

Posted by johnwedd on 14 Dec 2008 | Tagged as: blog, gaming

Myst Online to be released fully open-source | Negative Approach - CNET News.

Having grown up with Myst and URU, i remember being being in awe of the 3d worlds and frustrated at the puzzles that seamed to have no logical basis. But i was addicted, but not once did i ever pay attention to the story. Something about a guy looking for his dad on a creepy yet mystical island.

What worries me about this is that MYST, Myst:online, and URU are all old and a bit on the crappy side. Granted, gametap and ubisoft had done subsequent upgrades to the software to better utilize the hardware, its not all that much better than the original.

The original was made in hypercard, and that legacy code kinda carried through out the game, however, with open source giving this property a leg up, i expect alot more out of the game.

  • Full OpenGL supported graphics
  • Lighting and textures get a full. high quality make over
  • 3d sound implemented to some degree.
  • Linux ports

The most important thing i expect to see is the original team of developers leading the charge. Thats right, i want the developers that made it to begin with to take a firm but forgiving hand in leading the open source development, that means new content, conversion of older content, and simply being availible to Open Source Developers to have there brains picked.

Quake, decent, and Doom, all got a hands off approach from the original developers, and did great. However, if the original developers contributed to the project, they would encourage more growth in the hobbist and part-time professionals.

My wife wants Merch….

Posted by johnwedd on 21 Oct 2008 | Tagged as: gaming, news

My wife has fervently expressed her wish to have a Tauren Plush Shammy. I know about the plush murlocs and the figure print characters, but she wants a male Tauren Plush Shammy or Drood. I’ve seen the home made versions, so don’t point those out to me yet, i know they exsist.

Star Pirates - YARRR IN SPACEE!!!!

Posted by johnwedd on 07 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: gaming, review

lately, i’ve been addicted to two things. online, streaming video of television shows, and the web-game Star Pirates. Its an excellent way to have fun in the background while working, for those moments when you are in a hurry up and wait mode. Its more fast paced than most online web-MMO’s where in things happen and advice in minutes rather than hours or days.

This by no means makes it perfect, but the designers and programmers have done there best to have the “forever beta” feel. An ongoing idea that the game is always willing to shift, change and improve. they are very freindly to both paying customers and free customers in a way that is similar to puzzle pirates. They allow an interchangable form of currency that doesn’t neccessarily favor the free or paying members.

The game needs alot of work but the game elements are almost entirely suggested by the players, making the gameplay it self (rather than the software) sort-of open source. i gotta say, so long as they stay freindly with the players and keep there paying customers happy, they are in for a long and healthy life.

Check them out HERE.

Grinding and idoicy, i hate you nerds

Posted by johnwedd on 24 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: blog, gaming, rant

for the past few days, its all been about the Heavy. I’ve been Playing TF2 for quite a while now, and thought that the achievements in the heavy pack would be easy.

well it isn’t when everyone else is trying to also get the acheivements. I got the Sandvich and Natasha so far, need the K.G.B’s . hopefully i’ll get it here soon.

Another thing, Star Trek online and Diablo 3 fanbois seam to be setting an example of what out the fan base is devolving to. A bunch of panicky geeks that are constantly in a stage of nerd rage. You don’t know how annoying it is to see people whining about A)a game they know little about,B)how they make a big deal over stupid shit and C)its not there property to begin with.

here where it is, they make the games, you don’t: unless you can make the games, then you have no right to say how its made.

GTA IV Coming to PC!

Posted by Eric Canales on 15 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: gaming, news

On the 7th of August I got an email from Rockstar Propaganda. To my delight it was the announcement for GTA 4.

The message I received said:

We are proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto IV will be arriving for the platform it was birthed on this November. Grand Theft Auto IV for the PC will feature everything from the acclaimed original console releases, along with newly expanded multiplayer just for the PC and more.

Grand Theft Auto IV for the PC debuts on November 18th in North America and on November 21st in Europe. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more details.

Better late than never if you ask me. While my buddies have been playing the game for quite some time, I’ve been holding out. Oh, I’m only human, I’ve driven around and massacred quite a bit, but I’ve saved myself from playing the missions or watching all the little extras so that I can enjoy the release on the PC.

You can expect a full review from me shortly after release!
