College is indeed stressful, so is Vista

Posted by johnwedd on 11 Jan 2008 | Tagged as: article, blog, news, rant

Hey guys,

Not much going on in the site, but that doesn’t stop life!

Believe it or not, Tc-DaaX, one of my best writers, has been MIA since well before the holiday season. We’re worried, but not so much so. And thusly, the site has suffered. Doesn’t say much for my integrity as an administrator does it now? On the good side of news Aiglos is back, hopefully for good. His articles have always been awesome and sweet, and i think his disconnection has done him good in his recovery from the furry undercover work he did for us. With steady and regular medication it might lead to a full recovery.

If the title of this entry is any indication to you, I am in college now. I usually am in school for 4 to 6 hours a day. Books where enormous and the classes are all kinds of stressful and boring. Its not the instructor’s fault, the simple fact that i have to take them the first quarter is real issue. I’ll have to remind myself to get something along the lines of interesting electives in the spring.

It was all thanks to my funding, after i was approved i was able to purchase a laptop computer. So now i have my own computer and i no longer have to strain my marriage to get online. (Praise the pie gods) Unfortunatly, it came with Vista.

Now, don’t get me wrong, i really enjoy the Vista Aero interface and the search options. The error handling is smoother than silk and widgets are surprisingly useful, if not entertaining. But the way that microsoft really boned the pooch is how much memory and processor resources the OS takes to itself.

Not to mention the amazing amount of backwards compatibility issues that exist. The Unreal Tournament 3 demo that i was able to play nicely on my wifes computer looks like an old gameboy color game on this one. I simply chalked it up to the fact that Vista and OpenGL don’t play well, and the fact that the video card on this thing is, in fact, an ATI (yes, i feel dirty using it.)

So i tried the Call of Duty 4 demo that i have been drooling over ever since my neighbor brandon let me play it on his 360. and the graphics where fine, just unbelievably slow. completely out of sync with the audio to. And so I though, “maybe its just these new higher octane games that i can’t play, I’ll just try GameTap.”

I downloaded the client, and installed. Lo and behold, it crashes on startup, saying i had an issue with my video card drivers. I had forgotten one of the cardinal rules of gaming on a brand new PC, update the SHIT out of everything twice, remove the junk-ware and then reboot as needed. oye vey, i need a better hobby.

well after i have properly cleansed and sanctified the machine, it started running with a bit more pep, UT3 demo still sucks on it, but gametap runs well enough on it. Its got a smaller screen, but it works alright.

since most of my school stuff is computer related, i will be posting more, and i will see if i can’t encourage my writers to do the same.

About Online Gaming..

Posted by Mystara on 19 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: article, gaming, rant

It is indeed one of the very small joys of life to steal someone’s tetris high score under their nose, especially if you know that they have been playing for hours to achieve that goal, and it took you around a half less time because you play on a harder level. I can imagine how the vein on the forehead of my jolly fellow and competitor starts growing and how a very heavy sigh escapes his lips before he sits down, counts to ten and starts all to play again.

Must say that I admire his patience and will to beat me in a small arcade game like tetris. It does take some personality to waste hours and hours of your life to it, although I’m not rather sure whether or not it crosses the line of healthy hobby. I’ve been a member of the forum where this small contest between him and me takes part for almost three years now, and we’ve been fighting for the status of Master of Tetris almost since my joining day. Why almost? It took me sometime to get into tetris, and actually develop to a level where I can say I’m better than average.

I’ve noticed similar events take place between other players in other games. The competition situation gets lit by something very small, and off we go; You’re stuck with a game that gets out dated fast just because you can’t let the other win. Arcade games at a forum are only a single example. A friend of mine accidentally stole one low level creature from another player in an MMORPG when he was grinding to get up from lvl 1, and he got himself what could be called a Nemesis. After a short while he found it very, very annoying, but in the long run he has admitted that having someone to compete with.. someone who’s always trying to mock you or prove they are better than you was what made the game fun. He would’ve quit playing the game long ago in case that wouldn’t of seemed like he was giving up.

This rises up an interesting question - do we play online only to show off the size of our e-penis, or is it for the fun of challenge brought by wider variety of players? I think that most of us would like to answer both, at least I’d like to. Also, in a situation where I really, really would need to choose only one I’d go for the latter, because I’m like that, no matter how much I enjoy the frustrated look on the face of someone who’s trying to beat my high score.

What about you?

Myst’s Mumblings

Posted by Mystara on 19 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: blog, news, rant

Honey, I'm home!

Greetings YerGamernetlings, I come in peace from planet GU and you don’t need to take me to your leader, as I think it was he who sucked my brains out, created me a user account and rolled a stone of responsibility on my shoulders. =P My (nick) name is Mystara, n’ thou may call me Myst if you want to.

The stone had some kind of carving on it.. I think it was something like: “Bring new content here *growl*” But I don’t really remember for sure. So.. Here I am. I’m not sure how much I can add to the intellectual part of the site, as I’m not much of a gamer (I don’t own a single console, and the only gaming platform I have is my PC.. which gaming side is overly under used for mainly my time goes to hanging online and doing arts). My favorite games are strategy & rpg along with puzzle arcade games.

On art side I’m mostly into pixel art (spriting, tiles and scenery) , playing around with GIMPshop (I guess it could be called painting), writing (Impressionistic short stories and some style of free form poetry), and of course traditional drawing and painting.

I’m not completely sure what else to add to this first rock that I’m going to throw back at yer leader. You’ll learn more as time goes by and I start mumbling more. =P

A christmas wish list to the gameing industry…

Posted by johnwedd on 19 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: gaming, rant

this is a short but well meant christmas wish list to the gaming industry.

  1. A game based movie that doesn’t suck - people, is it really necessary to pump out mediocre screenplays that come off as misguided attempts at fan fiction?
  2. Modularly upgradeable laptops that don’t cost a fortune to purchase - Laptops that rival desktops is one thing, but considering that the way they are built makes them nae expendable, means that the price doesn’t seam worth it.
  3. a Dungeons and Dragons update that isn’t a crayon drawing - Seriously, Wizards? please, for once in your god forsaken life; remember that games aren’t something you just whip up. (not ones you intend to sell, anyway.)
  4. New Ramen flavors - I would love to have a break from the norm. Cheeseburger ramen, Bacon ramen, hell, i’ll even take tofu ramen as a sign that you guys are trying at least. (note: i know that this isn’t exactly gameing industry, but come ON)
  5. Finally, Rehashing old games is fun and all, but how about some original stuff? - I know that bringing back the truly inspiring games in one form or another is almost always a good idea. But thats not what we gamers live for, we want NEW SHINY DAMN IT!!

well thats my list, tell me about yours.

I’ve been watching a lot of geek entertainment stuff. Big bang theory, chuck, code monkeys, scrubs, etc…..

I’ve found that should i ever have the nerve to download every single one of those episodes that i enjoy, i can make my own Geek Television. (internet streaming FTW!!!) But theirs those pesky, copyright laws. But, thats neither here nor their.

i finally got my review done. it only took a total of six days…….dang it. i need my own laptop, there is no ways about it.

Enemy Territory!!! its a territory, WITH ENEMIES!!!!

Posted by johnwedd on 24 Nov 2007 | Tagged as: gaming, rant, review

before i go down this dangerous road with the possible fan-boy incursion and flame war; i just want to mention that i have nothing but respect for id software and the quake franchise. Now that thats out of the way, lets get down to brass tacks. I am very very, unimpressed.

Seriously, i may have been hoping for that same amazing, feeling i got when the quake series when it was the only three dimensional game in town, (literally). My own memories of quake is a constant trauma of drably colored walls and and repetitive levels while getting my ass handed to me by a lot by the online players.

No, i did realize that its a nice change but enough of that.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, is a Class Based First person Shooter with True Mission Based Objectives. Which is a just a long way to say that “your hopelessly dependent on your fellow players and bots all in varied levels of mental retardation.”

Now i won’t argue the fact that its an unprecedented break for the normal FPS paradigm to add in the idea of mandatory teamwork. Long time coming in some respects; but lets be realistic here. Do we really need to try and convince the rest of half witted gaming brothers and sisters to delay the XP grinding and farming in order to actually accomplishing the FUCKING MISSION!!!!.

Not to mention that its nothing more than a direct copy of there former seemingly unknown before Xfire existed game. Wolfenstein: enemy territory was supposed to be an expansion to the last Wolfenstein game but since that franchise had been ran into the ground; they released it as freeware full game instead. This kept them famous enough to have people look forward to what ever the fuck they’re working on.

ET:QW isn’t some spiritual successor, its a fucking carbon copy. a few balance issues addressed, and a lot prettier graphics, but its still the same exact game. You essentially end up paying money for a remake of a completely free game.

All that aside, i guess its a decent game with good ideas and at least a few hours of single player game play. However, going online is an exercise in futility, trying to convince others to play the game. its only average, but solid enough to make it worth the trouble as a bargain bin or demo download, not enough to bust a nut over.

Johnwedd’s daily

Posted by johnwedd on 15 Nov 2007 | Tagged as: blog, gaming, rant

Hey, guys. i’ve been doing a few things, first off, i’ve been playing magic the gathering at the library. I’ve found that if i win enough at magic, i can feel better at being computer-less. Thankfully i won a few games and felt better for long enough to install and play Diablo 2. (did you know i happen to have like, 3 copies of the disks, and only one serial key.) after three failed attempts and only dieing once. I am now in Lut Gohlien!

i installed some SEO and stat tracking software on the website, so come on in and click around. (i’m working on makeing this site a viable investment.)

A lil bird told me that the rumored Marvel MMO is on edge, and might not make it to fruition. I guess its for the best, considering that theres only so many wolverine and magneto clones that i can handle in any one game.

my wife is just GUSHING over the 2.3 patch in world of warcraft, zul’aman looking pretty good. A huge one armed one eyed troll, and the opportunity to beat the shit out of four furry fucks. Its win win!!

The Dial-Up Saga, Part the Second: Aiglos’ Bogus Journey

Posted by Aiglos on 15 Nov 2007 | Tagged as: blog, news, rant

Yesterday our story ended with Aiglos downloading some l337 f1451-1 64/\/\32 from Newgrounds. Now, I’ve had a serious love-hate relationship with NG throughout my career on the interwebs. I’ve used it to market my music, because there’s a really strong audio community there, but at the same time…jesus, there are so many idiots on that site. Newgrounds is to annoying 13 year old emo kids what a candle flame is to moths. They just go around in circles, going faster and faster, until they melt into a burnt, smoking combined carcass of “photoshop me” requests and “lol fgt” spam. It’s not pretty, though it’s pretty entertaining if you take a step back. However, that’s not my main concern at this point. My main concern is that it takes me five minutes to load the front page.

After beating my head against the table for a while, I finally got to the good stuff, and I picked out a good selection, used my l33t h4x to find the urls, and went off to work for eight hours while they downloaded (for the record, they were almost all complete when I got back…almost).

I have to recommend a couple of these games, even to all the whores with broadband out there…you bastards. First of all, Darkcut2, by jmtb02, is freaking insane, though short. You know that Trauma Center game for DS and Wii? Imagine that, taking place during the American Civil War, with lots of blood, puss, maggots, and whiskey. Fuck yes. Highly recommended, if only for the spectacle. Graphics are sweet, too.

Secondly, I have to give some love to the maker of The Impossible Quiz 1 & 2. Yes, it’s a quiz, which means automatic fail. BUT. Does anyone remember You Don’t Know Jack? I was addicted to that shit for a while, and these games are like YDKJ on cocaine. And crack. And LSD. All at once.

Finally, anyone who’s got their PS3 online may have heard about flOw, which is supposedly one of the first games that was made available via download for PS3. Originally it was a PC flash game, and it was free. It is so kickass, words can’t even describe it. It makes me feel sophisticated. I’m sitting here playing it, listening to my “String Quartet Tribute to Radiohead” album, sipping some Earl Grey, and feeling basically superior to everyone and their mom. Seriously, I’m not even going to try to do it justice. Go play it right now.

Flash games get boring fast, though. I’m gonna have to look for new entertainment today. I have an idea, but I’m a little scared…ah, fuck it. It’ll be hilarious.

Aiglos’ Bogus Journey is ready to begin. I’m going….to Furcadia.

May god have mercy on my soul.

The Laughable Adventures of Aiglos, that n00b with Dial-up

Posted by Aiglos on 13 Nov 2007 | Tagged as: blog, gaming, rant, review

Imagine, if you will, a long, empty stretch of sand desert. There’s nothing on the horizon. The land is utterly flat and featureless. But this isn’t just a normal emptiness. This is a malicious emptiness. A overbearingly, almost painfully frustrating lack of any feature of interest. The only thing one can do is set his sights on a faint glimmer spotted on the horizon and trudge forward, praying to find something interesting, praying that whatever he’s after is real, and, if it’s not a mirage, that it doesn’t suck ass. This is the predicament I now find myself in. I am a man on the edge. A man with nothing left to lose. A man…on dial-up.

Did you like that allegory? All poetical and thought provoking, right? Well, don’t expect any more shit like that. I’m not feeling particularly poetic at the moment. In fact, I’m feeling murderous. And that’s not normal. I’m one of those “Peace, Love, Unity” hippie types…and yet, at the moment, I want nothing more than to pack up some kitchen knives and stomp out to the corporate headquarters of a certain cable company that shall remain nameless. After over a year of hassling with their bullshit, and a few months without any services at all, I’m done. VOIP phone service? Gone. I hate talking on the phone 500 channels? Fuck that, I never watch TV anyways. 5MBPS interwebz…oh shit.
So here I sit, rocking my 56k new hotness. To be fair, I had built it up in my mind to be far worse than it really is. I can load a few pictures at the same time, at the very least, and text is like a breeze…oh god. Do you see what I’m reduced to? How am I supposed to live with this? And how, more importantly, am I supposed to game with this? You know, a lot of games these days don’t even support 56k, and the ones that do give me this little slap in the face on the side of their boxes:
Recommended: Cable/DSL Internet connection @ 256Kbps or higher
Required: 56Kbps Internet connection
You know what I call that? I call that a filthy lie. I’ve gone through my games to see what is “supported.” I went through all my Steam games. Counterstrike? Yarite, lol. How about some fun mods? Battlegrounds 2? N…no. Dystopia? Nope. The SHIP, FOR FUCK’S SAKE??? Nothing doing. On, then, to the MMO field. I loaded LOTRO, praying I could get back to hanging out with my Kinship, even though the game itself is…well, yeah. Guess what I get? 2 Gigs worth of patches from the last few months. Okay, save that for a later day, when I get really desperate. Finally, I turned to my old standby, Savage. Surely a game over four years old had to make allowances…the broadband revolution was only partway through back then! It starts up, looks fine, the server list is a bit slow but nothing awful. Connecting…connecting…
…800 ping.
So, I’m really in trouble now. I need something to keep in shape for whenever AT&T decides to provide DSL to my area. Therefore, it’s time for me to dig through my motley collection of single player games. HL2? Played and played and played. Fable? Played and Played and Played. Jade Empire…do you notice a pattern here? I haven’t bought a new single player game in a year or so, firstly because I think that paying 50-60 bucks for a game is obscene when the price just drops down in a couple of months, especially when there’s not the replayability that’s inherent in a MP focused title. Only games I’m REALLY psyched about do I pay that sort of premium for, and when I do, I usually just preorder. Otherwise, it’s the bargain bin for me. So, off I go to my friendly neighborhood Walmart, to sell my soul and morals for the low, low prices only a megamonopoly can provide me. Let me tell you, there is nothing to make your faith in the game industry plummet like looking through this graveyard of shit. And I do mean a graveyard of shit: it’s the place where shit buries shit that’s died. Think how that must smell. Dead shit. You know what dead shit smells like? It smells like Impossible Creatures, a 5 year old RTS from Relic and Microsoft Game Studios. Does anybody else remember anticipating this game? I was 14 at the time, so I didn’t know any better. It was a pretty cool idea: create your own units by splicing the genes of different species of animals, thereby creating unique models through the “army builder” and giving your units combinations of the abilities of each separate animal. You know what we got? I didn’t until a few days ago, because I actually decided to drop ten bucks on it. What we got is a broken Warcraft clone, with broken resource management, broken build orders, and the army builder, the main selling point of the game, implemented with about as much thought as a three year old child gives before sucking the sweet, sweet ink out of a permanent marker. The only thing I could think about the whole time I played (2 hours) was, “This is from the studio that gave us Homeworld and Company of Heroes.” Even the name sucks. I remember that the working title was “Sigma.” That was a cool name. Then they..well, I really don’t know what possessed them to change the name to something so stupid. I also don’t know why they felt the need to create a crappy 1930’s era backstory starring a hero named “Rex Chance” and a love interest named “Lucy Willing.” I get the impression that she’s an easy lay, though I’m not sure what led me to believe this. I also get the impression that Rex has a really tiny dick. There’s no other reason for him to have such a ridiculously pathetic attempt at a macho name. Call your hero Stringfellow Hawk next time, fuckers.
After rolling around in that cesspool for a while, Impossible Creatures became the very first game I have ever literally thrown away. Into the garbage can it went, right where it belonged. I felt cleansed. I felt enlightened. I felt as though there was new hope for me. Then I went to check my email and got treated to the musical saw orchestra of my modem while I waited for an hour to connect.
Somebody end this before the dial-up steals my soul. Oh, too late: I’m downloading flash games to keep myself occupied. Portal: The Flash Version is actually kind of fun.
…better than Impossible Creatures, anyways.

Johnwedd’s daily

Posted by johnwedd on 13 Nov 2007 | Tagged as: article, blog, rant

For what its worth, i enjoy more than just games. I know, stuff exists other than games on the internet (theres porn to). but anyway, i spent most of the time researching SEO for the site. In the end i just got a word press plugin that will do the job for me. after that i’ll start looking for better themes, as i’ve been told; the gray on black is “so last year”. (Queer eye for the Web Guy, lol)

I also want to welcome our newest writer Aiglos, who’s current adventures in dial-up have caught my eye. be sure to catch him on the flip side as he gives us updates on how hell would be in the world of broadband. (we honestly pitty this man.)

I also realized something today about my friends over there at moonstruck games. a few weeks ago, a programmer friend of mine left the team, taking the graphics engine he developed for a simple and evil and stupid thing. One of the other programmers suddenly decided that he didn’t like working with the CUSTOM BUILT engine, and decided to rebuild the engine AGAIN!

Now the Canadian coder that was kicked out is a nice person, he’s a clichéd Canadian (beer, hockey, poutine, etc) but hes a good guy. why Ryan and Pingu did this beyond me, but it seams they are dedicated to screwing themselves up. They have yet to Complete anything!! Anything, at all, not even small games. they need to give an apology to Canadian.
